Mooring capstan, as its name indicates, is the capstan used for boat or ship mooring when the boat or ship reaches to a port or a dock. It has the same function as mooring winches. Mooring capstan is also usually used for boat anchoring. Material type of mooring rope will influence capstan drum size, fair-lead type and bending radius, occupied deck space and so on. It’s advised to choose the suitable mooring rope material according to strength, elasticity, durability and operating performance, and cable is suggested for large ship and synthetic fiber rope for medium and small ships. According to material and diameter of the rope, mooring capstans can be designed and produced to suit different types of ships. Bollard is cast or welded pile firmly installed on deck to fasten one end mooring rope, and there are single-post bollard and double-post bollard according to ship mooring needs.

Tips on Mooring Capstan Maintenance
Mooring capstan is a kind of important deck machinery used to tighten the mooring line with the drum or chain wheel and to keep a ship in position. The main parts of the capstan include drum, power drive system, reduction, main shaft, foundation, brake device etc. No matter vertical capstan or horizontal capstan you use on the ship, it’s important to check and maintain the capstan regularly. (1) The corrosion of bracket and foot bolt of outer case, the damage, abrasion and corrosion of the drum, the water tightness of the controller and the brake and clutch are needed to checked to make sure that they work reliably and effectively;
(2) It’s also needed to lubricate the working parts and record the wear and tear of the parts; for wire cable, it’s needed to check its rust and broken wires;
(3) For plant fiber cable, it’s needed to check its abrasion and if there is mildew within rope strands;
